Outstanding 4-H Volunteer Recognition, in memory of Keith Barnes

Background on Keith Barnes (1942-1984):
Keith was a nine-year 4-H member in Sacramento County, where he was a 1959-60 County All Star. He was subsequently a 4-H leader for 10 years in Sacramento County, and from 1970-72 was Club Council President. He then served as a leader for eleven years in Placer County.
Keith spearheaded the effort to establish the California 4-H Leaders Council in 1972. He served two terms as its first president, from 1973-76, and was again elected to the position in 1980, where he continued until his untimely death in 1984.
Keith was involved in a variety of community activities in addition to his deep commitment to 4-H. He especially loved youth soccer and was field manager for a 500-member soccer club. Even when engaged at the top levels in the state 4-H program, he continued his role as a project leader in sheep, electricity, and rocketry.
Keith Barnes is remembered as a loving family man who had no enemies, and who was as comfortable setting up tables for a meeting or sweeping up afterward as he was taking on the challenges of state 4-H leadership. In 1977, he was selected as a recipient of the Outstanding Leader Award for which he attended the National 4-H Congress. This award has been renamed in his honor.
Keith offered a simple philosophy for youth development: "We are here to teach 4-H'ers to be good citizens. If they learn about their projects, then that's OK too."
