Director
  • Major initiatives on childhood obesity and healthy living launched.

More public attention is being focused on the importance of healthy living at both the national and state levels. In February, First Lady Michelle Obama announced an ambitious national goal of solving the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation so that children born today will reach adulthood at a healthy weight and unveiled a nationwide campaign - Let's Move - to help achieve it. "The surge in obesity in this country is nothing short of a public health crisis that is threatening our children, our families, and our future," said First Lady Michelle Obama. "In fact, the health consequences are so severe that medical experts have warned that our children could be on track to live shorter lives than their parents."

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also continues his multi-prong California campaign emphasizing a variety of strategies including improving nutrition and physical activity in schools, through healthy meals, physical education standards, and removing junk foods and sodas. Supporting this work, California First Lady, Maria Shiver has been active in developing more playgrounds and school and community gardens as a means of promoting healthy lifestyles.

These major state and national initiatives complement the work of the 4-H Healthy Living Mission Mandate. Check out the 4-H Deliveries Stories, http://www.ca4h.org/4HDelivers.asp on the California 4-H Website for some exciting examples of youth providing leadership in enhancing healthy living in their own communities. Also below in the 4-H UPDATES you will find more resources to help start projects in your community.

Foundation
  • Talking about 4-H- Positioning and Supporting Statements

Donors - whether they are individuals, foundations, companies or governmental agencies - never give to 4-H because we have needs. They give to us because we meet needs, needs for individual children, our specific communities and society as a whole. Our goal is to have our funding partners say: "I give to your organization because it is a catalyst for everything I believe in."

In order for this to happen, we must be able to articulate the needs we meet and the impacts we create. We must be able to answer simply and concisely a few key questions that communicate our essence compellingly. These questions include who we are, what we do, how we do it and why anyone should care. Being able to answer these questions broadly at the very top layer of our existence as an organization is called a positioning statement. The positioning statement should be the catalyst for further questions - or supporting statements. These supporting statements further develop the story that describes all the richness that 4-H represents in our state. Positioning and supporting statements are different than a mission statement, but are meant to complement it.

On the February Virtual Brown Bag, a sample position statement on the California 4-H Program was shared:

    • 4-H is creating a workforce prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st century. 4-H is a public/private partnership helping young people in rural, urban and suburban California reach their full potential. By involving kids in hands-on projects related to science, agriculture, citizenship, the environment, and healthy lifestyles we develop focused, articulate, confident leaders engaged in their communities. We take pride in involving professionals, parents, volunteers and researchers in our work.

We invite you to help develop a position statement for the 4-H Youth Development Program by answering the key questions Who are we, what we do, how do we do it, and most importantly why should anyone care and click on this link to offer your thoughts, feedback and suggestions
    http://ucce.ucdavis.edu/survey/survey.cfm?surveynumber=4521

This is a work in progress and we will share the feedback and the 2.0 version in our next update.

Additionally The California 4-H Foundation has recently sponsored several activities to build our capacity across the state to fund and deliver high quality programs:
    • A Guidestar webinar featuring three experts in sustainable funding for social profit organizations. http://www2.guidestar.org/rxg/news/webinars/webinar-archive.aspx
    • A readiness assessment of communities wanting to develop local plans that lead to financial sustainability. 14 counties chose to participate.
    • Training and implementation support for several "demonstration" counties to pilot this fundraising process
    • A Virtual Brown Bag discussion which focused on Branding 4-H
    To hear Audio recording https://cc.readytalk.com/play?id=d6xl4f
    To download Slides: http://uc-d.na4.acrobat.com/feb2010vbb:

This is only the beginning of the California 4-H Foundation's 5-year strategy to partner with staff and volunteers to develop sustaining funding streams that strengthen our programs in local communities across the state. Stay tuned!
