Drew, Los Padres 4-H Club, Santa Barbara County

Drew, five year member of the Los Padres 4-H Club

Drew loves rocketry! He has been the Jr. Leader of his favorite project, Aerospace and Rocketry, for two years; “4-H has made me a better leader by giving me the opportunity to help lead the rocketry club.” He has given multiple demonstrations of different types of rockets and created a Power Point presentation about Apollo 13. A crowd pleaser, “Pop Rockets” were made out of film canisters and powered by Alka-Seltzer and water. He also attended the County-Wide Aerospace Campout where he learned about many aspects of space and technology and got to participate in hands-on activities. He has launched multiple rockets at the Endeavor Center; one, he calculated, went higher than all of the others that day. Drew states, “I like Rocketry because I am able to build, imagine, and launch things which I would not regularly get to do.”

Drew is also the treasurer of his club and is in the Treasurer’s project. He participates in the Citizenship, Leadership, Pets and Small Animals, Dogs and Communications projects. His next goal is to become the Junior Leader in the Communications project. Drew is definitely an experienced public speaker. The skills he acquired in the Communications project were used when he was interviewed on the local news station for the space campout.

On the responsibilities of being a Junior Leader, Drew learned “that people need to be reminded about meetings or they often forget to come.” Drew goes above and beyond to help out the Rocketry project leader, Mary, and has earned her high praise. “I most admire the enthusiasm he brought to the project and the leadership he provided,” said Mary.

For the future Drew will continue to set goals for himself and achieve them. He is proud that, “4-H opens many doors of opportunity to me.”
