Round 1 (October 15, 2011)
Underprivileged Children's Holiday Party
The Alameda County, Del Arroyo 4-H Club has been awarded $1000 for the Underprivileged Children's Holiday Party Project. This project provided underpriviledged children with crafts, holiday gifts, snacks, and a visit from Santa Claus.
Project Rabbit
The Alameda County, Redwood 4-H club has been awarded $1000 for Project Rabbit. The goal of this project inlcudes educating the community about rescuing rabbits and adopting shelter rabbits. Outreach provided by 4-H members includes in-class presentations at local schools and rabbit shelters.
Million Trees Project
San Mateo and San Francisco Countywide 4-H has been awarded $1000 for the 4-H Million Trees Project. This project entails planting 20 native redwood trees in Flood Park, which is a popular San Mateo County Park.
Goal Day
The Santa Cruz County All Stars have been awarded $1000 for the Goal Day Project. This project entails creating a "Goal Day" where youth from Santa Cruz, San Benito, Monterey, and Santa Clara have an opportunity to discover career interests, and make goals relating to their interests. Goal day will allow youth members to immerse themselves in a variety of careers. With this project, the Santa Cruz All Stars hope to encourage youth members to grow an intrinsic motivation to pursue goals.
Friends for Love
The Santa Cruz County, Felton 4-H club has been awared $1000 for their Friends for Love Project. This project provides children in custody of Child Protection Services with a handmade stuffed animal to cuddle with and a handwritten note to comfort them. This project will impact children who have been taken away from homes due to being abandoned or abused.
Service Learning
The Solano County, Westwind 4-H club has been awarded $1000 for their Service Learning Project. This project includes purchasing fleece and cutting supplies to make knotted fleece blankets, to be distributed to cancer patients within the county.
Sutter County Flag Project
The Sutter County, Buttes 4-H Club has been awarded $1000 for the Sutter County Flag Project. This project is the second phase of efforts to design and construct a flag for Sutter County. With the design previously approved by City Council, funds will be used to construct four flags to be displayed in public spaces.
School Nutrition Education
The Yolo County, Cottonwood 4-H Club has been awarded $1000 for their School Nutrition Education Project. In this project, 4-H members will facilitate taste testing of seasonal fruit at a local elementary school, in order to increase awareness about the importance of eating fruit. In addition, 4-H youth members will educate local schools about the importance of healthful diets.
Take A Bite Out Of Plastic Pollution
4-H members who have dubbed themselves the “Alameda County Green Teens” have been awarded $1000 to expand their four-year project, Take A Bite Out Of Plastic Pollution. The teens are planning a local symposium to educate restaurant and store owners about compostable alternatives to plastic containers, including a cost analysis of changing to bio-degradable products. The 4-H teens also have plans to launch a pilot program to distribute non-disposable forks at restaurants which people can return (or keep) when they pledge to refuse plastic forks.
Round 2 (January 15, 2012)
100 Pillowcases
In Merced County, the St. Anthony’s 4-H Sewing Project has been awarded $1,000 for the 100 Pillowcases project. The California State 4-H Fashion Revue Committee has challenged each county to make 10 pillow cases for charity. This project members will make 100 pillow cases and donate them to a local hospital, women’s shelter, and foster care agency.
Bicycle Recycling
In Sacramento County, the American River 4-H Club received $1,000 to expand efforts to dismantle old, broken-down bicycles and rebuild them from scratch for those less fortunate in our community. This project encourages an active lifestyle and provides transportation for those in need.
Community Beautification
In Placer County, the Place Hills 4-H Club received $1,000 to complete a tile mosaic art project that will become a permanent display at the Meadow Vista Community Pool. The 4-H club will provide follow-up work, which includes adding hundreds of tiles to complete the art pieces and installing the art at the community pool.
First Aid Kits
Alameda County’s Bayside 4-H Club was awarded $1,000 to assemble and distribute well-stocked first aid kits to community organizations that work with children. Kits will be provided to countywide 4-H project leaders and teachers. The Bayside 4-H Club will also provide kits to families in local shelters and the City of Fremont recreation programs who provide programs/camps for children.
GOATS: Grazing Overzealously Addresses Terrain Situations
In San Diego County, the Escondido 4-H Club received $1,000 to design a viable and ecologically friendly solution to address the vegetation management problems in San Diego County. Project members will use Boer meat goats for weed abatement and increase awareness of using livestock to address environmental issues.
Living Upstream: Community Stewardship of the San Lorenzo River Watershed
Santa Cruz’s Boulder Creek 4-H Club was awarded $1,000 to work with community collaborators to create and install educational artwork that also serves as trash and cigarette butt receptacles. This project develops youth leadership in the stewardship of important local natural resources at the headwaters of the San Lorenzo River, the largest watershed in the Monterey Bay.
Orphan Kitten Pilot
The Solano County Orphan Kitten Pilot Project received $1,000 to give youth an opportunity to foster orphan kittens and learn valuable life skills. The project will create a network of foster homes for kittens that are too young to be placed in a shelter. Once they reach an adoptable age, the shelter will accept the kittens and promote their permanent adoption.
Portable Display Greenhouse
In Plumas County, the Feather River and American Valley 4-H Clubs received $1,000 to support their collaborative efforts for the Portable Display Greenhouse project. 4-H members, fairground staff, and other service agencies will partner to install a greenhouse that will raise awareness of small space food production. Visitors will learn how they can produce and prepare food on a budget.
Promoting Bystander Engagement
In Nevada County, three 4-H clubs (Chicago Park, Misty Mountain, and Grass Valley) received $1,000 to partner with the community-based Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Coalition and provide educational presentations to local middle and high school students. The presentations will focus on engaging bytanders to help prevent violent situations. 4-H members will participate in the trainings and advocate for non-violence in their communities.
Quilts for Injured Soldiers
The California State Fashion Revue Committee and the Nevada County-based Misty Mountain 4-H Club received $1,000 to create handmade quilts for military personnel receiving medical treatment. The quilts are sized to fit stretchers and gurneys and sent home with patients when discharged. The project teaches the 4-H community about soldiers, patriotism, compassion, and dedication to those who have sacrificed so much.
Quincy Star Follies
In Plumas County, the Feather River 4-H Club received $1,000 to put on a dancing and singing performance for the entire community. Plumas County is a very rural area with few opportunities for the community to participate in or enjoy the arts. Youth will be involved in scheduling, costumes, make up, practices, video, design and group support throughout the entire event.
Redwood Empire Foster Care
Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley 4-H Club received $1,000 to collect donations and purchase items to place in care bags for foster children. The bags will include essential items such as socks, underwear, pajamas, book, and stuffed animal. Care bags are distributed to children brought into the emergency foster care program.
Sharing 4-H Horticulture with UCP of Central California
The Fresno County 4-H All Star Team received $1,000 to build planter boxes for United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of Central California. The planter boxes will be used as part of an educational class for disabled students. This project will fulfill UCP's wish for planter boxes and enable 4-H members to learn how to interact with disabled individuals.
Tie Blankets for Children
In San Luis Obispo County, the Los Osos 4-H Club received $1,000 to make 100 tie blankets for children in local hospitals. These blankets will provide comfort and warmth for children facing serious medical issues. 4-H members will increase their awareness of childhood illnesses while providing an important service to the community.
Town Sign Restoration
Merced County's Ballico-Cressey 4-H Club was awarded $1,000 to restore the weathered Ballico town sign. Club members will beautify the environment by providing weed and garbage removal and planting new plants. The club will also restore the sign with new paint, lettering, framing and shingles.
Voz Que Clama Community Playground
Sonoma County’s Alexander Valley 4-H Club will collaborate with Healdsburg Community Church to serve children in Tuis, Costa Rica. 4-H members received $1,000 to install a playground in a rural community in Tuis. The playground will provide a safe place for children and their families to be physically active.
Round 3 (March 15, 2012)
Habitat for Humanity
The Nevada County 4-H Washington Focus plans to partner with Habitat For Humanity for their community service learning project. They will learn about the local, national, and international Habitat for Humanity by researching and having a speaker. They will work in "The Restore," a fundraising arm of Habitat for Humanity. The Revolution of Responsibility grant will be used to purchase necessary building materials for the homes they will work on.
Community Service: Fairgrounds & Barn Area Bathroom
The Placer County, Flatlands 4-H Community Service Project will include cleaning, updating, painting and replacing non-working showers in both, the girls and boys bathrooms at the Placer County Fairgrounds.
Operation 4-HEROES--Fallen Soldier Memorial Park Project
Solano County's 4-H youth members and the Army National Guard have partnered to develop the Operation 4-HEROES Project. This project will develop a .5 acre park and recreational space in the Army National Guard Armory located in Fairfield. The site, when finished, will be called the Lawson Fallen Soldier Memorial Park. This park will be dedicated to individuals and their families who have served our country. This community park will be suitable for ceremonies, reflection, exercise, barbeques, get-togethers, and a community garden.
Junior Master Gardener - Nutrition Project
The Stanislaus County Hughson 4-H Club, Junior Master Gardener Nutrition Project will encourage and support gardens to create opportunities for children to discover fresh food, make healthier food choices, and reap the benefits from good nutrition.
SYO Pool & Park Landscape Beautification
The Sutter County, Sutter Butte SYO Pool and Park Landscape Beautification Project will provide landscaping materials to help beautify the completed Sutter Youth Organization's new pool. The old pool was replaced by using donated funds from community members.
Elbow Creek Elementary School Garden Project
The Elbow Creek 4-H club will assist the Elbow Creek Elementary School to put their garden project together. This project will be used as an outdoor classroom for all students who attend this school. The school's goal is to install and maintain shades & tables for this outdoor classroom. The 4-H Revolution of Responsibility grant will ensure the goals of Elbow Creek Elementary School.
Vintage Military Maintenance Community Service Project
Merced County, St. Anthony's Vintage Military Maintenence Community Service Project will work with Castle Air Museum to clean and maintain areas around their F-80 fighter jet. 4-H members will clean the plane and maintain the exhibit areas once a month. Additionally, twice a year an Open Cockpit Day will be held by 4-H members to educate visitors about the history of airplanes.
