2006 Dean Memorial 4-H Legacy Funding Recipients
Placer, Lincoln 4-H Club – “Celebrate Our Cultures” - $750.00
Our 4-H Club is very excited about our success as a new 4-H club that has grown to 45 members and 8 leaders in just three years! We are the only bilingual 4-H Club in our county. We are very unique; we hold all of our 4-H meetings and correspondence in both English and Spanish. We are requesting funding for three 4-H projects; cultural dance, cultural foods and baking and hands-on science. Many of our families are recent immigrants and are considered low-income by any standards. We will share our learning and project work with other 4-Hers in the county at the 4-H summer camp and other events.
Placer, Gold Country 4-H Club - “Engineering/Robotics” - $1,000.00
The Robotics aspect of Engineering requires a large financial commitment to obtain the equipment needed to pursue the project. After studying other aspects of engineering over the past several years, the project members are interested in studying robotics with the obstacles being the finances needed to pursue this interest. The club members are hoping that this project will interest older members so that more of these members will be retained in the 4-H program. We also feel that this would be a good outreach to the community.
Shasta – “GIS/GPS Project” - $1,147.50
GIS/GPS is a brand new project for Shasta County. Project members will learn about navigating with map and compass, making maps with Geographic Information Systems, and navigating and collecting data with Global Positioning Systems. Funds are needed to purchase a geospatial curriculum, a GPS kit for 10 that includes compasses, topographic maps and activities, and supplies to assembly portable geocaches for learning activities at 4-H field days and 4-H camp.
Shasta, Oak Run 4-H Club – “Rabbit Show” - $900.00
The Oak Run 4-H rabbit project would like to organize a rabbit show. We will invite our surrounding counties, local schools and developmentally disabled youth to join in the activities. We need this financial support as we live in a small community with very few resources. Most households are at or below the federal poverty levels financially. Therefore we have little financial support. We will use the proceeds to fund this show annual; we just need help getting started.
San Mateo, Belmont 4-H Club – “Clothing Project” - $550.00
We are requesting funding for a 4-H project in clothing that not only builds youth skills but provides a valuable service to those in the community that are less fortunate and homeless. The 4-H project is clothing and the service project is constructing and filling toiletry bags for Shelter Network of San Mateo County. The project will have many benefits, for all the youth involved, outreach to other club’s youth who will be invited to participate, and publicity for 4-H and recognition by local government official that youth in the program are connecting to community and positively impacting a very real social issue. To make the best quality product (toiletry bags), the project group is requesting financial support to purchase a serger, preferably one that has an automatic threader so youth can more independently operate the machine and construct durable gags. While the group is asking for donations of individual supplies to fill the bags, funds are needed to purchase shoelaces, toothbrushes for the bags. Once the prototype is complete, the project can share the idea with other 4-H groups statewide and encourage others to replicate the project.
San Diego, Escondido 4-H Club – “Developing a 4-H Marketing Tool for San Diego” - $600.00
San Diego County would greatly benefit from having a 4-H marketing tool to use in recruiting youth, leaders and in developing recognition of the benefits of 4-H in our communities. Morgan Mitchell videotaped 4-H activities last year as her All Star project. The professional production of the material collected will require a great deal of money. That is why this request is being made. The finished product will be presented to the San Diego Leaders’ Council and Teen Council to be used at local clubs and hopefully receive wide spread publicity through the media.
Santa Clara, El Sereno 4-H Club – “Agri-Business Poultry Project” - $157.50
We are the Agri-Business Poultry Project. We provide the general public with healthy, affordable chicks that will grow up to be egg-laying hens. We need financial resources for one main reason. In the past we have borrowed equipment, but in order to provide future generations with reliable equipment, we need to purchase our own. Money from the Dean Memorial Legacy Fund will make this possible. Thank you for considering our group.
Ventura, Loma Vista 4-H Club – “Trees, Turtles, and Tanzania” - $1,000.00
We are seeking support to expand our project activities. A majority of the funding will be used to improve a pond turtle and Monarch butterfly habitat (including our building a new pond). In addition, we will educate our community about combating global warming, restore habitat at a Santa Clara river conservation site, and initiate a fund-raising campaign that will benefit critical habitat reforestation in Tanzania. These activities will allow us to continue to expand our past year’s efforts, modeling how youth can create positive change in their community and world.
