4-H Service-Learning RFP Projects from 2006-2009

 Service-Learning Proposals Funded in 2006-07

On the Wild Side, Sacramento County awarded $1,850.00
The SacramentoOn the Wild Side Team composed of adults and teens from both the 4-H Club Program and the after-school YES Program collaborated with the Sacramento, Rio Linda, and Folsom Unified School Districts and Camp Fire USA to plan and carry out two weekend environmental education camps for urban students.

Down on the 4-H Farm, Tulare County awarded $2,500.00
Elbow Creek 4-H Community Service Project hosted a program for children from the Blind Baby Foundation to introduce children with limited or no sight a Halloween experience including a hay ride, petting farm, corn pool, pumpkin patch, and touch books.

Leadership Conference, Humboldt County , awarded $2,000.00
Humboldt County All Stars collaborated with several other youth serving organizations to provide a leadership conference to increase the leadership and service-learning skills of the teens.

Native American Tipi Playground , Tulare County awarded $2,500.00
Visalia ’s Community Pride Project will join with the Visalia Parks and Recreation Department to build a Native American Tipi play area in a new community park in the city.

Toiletry Bags for Homeless Shelter, San Mateo County awarded $250.00
The Belmont Sewing Project created toiletry bags and fill them with basic supplies for the homeless individuals and families who find temporary shelter at the Shelter Network.

Valley Center Adult School, San Diego County , $2,000.00
The Valley Center Community Service Group provided computer and English language assistance to adults and the children of the adult learners at the Valley Center Adult Education Center.

 

Service-Learning Proposals Funded in 2007-08

 Scarves for Breast Cancer Survivors , $233.50
The Belmont 4-H Sewing Project will collaborate with the Mills Peninsula Hospital Breast Cancer Support Group and supply hand-dyed silk scarves for recent cancer patients.

On the Wild Side Camp, $2,000.00
The Wild Side Camp offers a weekend camp for elementary school students to expand outdoor learning and wilderness opportunities for youth who would otherwise not have access to the natural environment.

Senior Citizen Prom, $1,000.00
The Siskiyou County Hi 4-H Club will provide a Senior Prom for all Siskiyou County senior residents during the holiday season. Their efforts are in collaboration with the Yreka Senior Citizenship Program and the Parks and Rec and will give senior citizens a chance to socialize and interact with young people in their community.

Sisson Meadow Public Access $1,100.00
The Strawberry Valley 4-H Club will work with the Siskiyou Land Trust to design, build and install public access benches on the Sisson Meadow Wetlands boardwalk.

4-H Million Trees Project, $1,000.00
Pacific 4-H will work with 4-H clubs to plant trees to combat global warming, Their long range goal over the next 4 years to reach 4-H clubs across the nation to plant 1,000,000 new trees.

 

Service-Learning Proposals Funded in 2008-09

The Shoe that Fits $750.00
The Oroville 4-H Club will collaborate with their local police to provide new socks and shoes for local children while raising their own awareness of the needs of families in their community.

Gardening for Sustainability $500.00
The Manila 4-H Recreation group will help to advance information about techniques of planning, planting, growing and preparing nutritious foods through a community garden program. They will work on community gardening activities and exchange seeds and plants to be used in personal gardens.

School Supplies for $1,200
Greenleaf 4-H Club will mount an effort to supply school supplies for underserved junior high students in their area with the over purpose of teaching fellow 4-H’ers about leadership, service, and giving back to their community. They will seek donations and build relationships with donors and business groups.

Rainwater Garden $1,200
The Water Action Collaborative is initiating a project at six schools in the county to educate and guide students through the process of creating a rain garden and rainwater harvesting at each site. Students will learn about water conservation, storm water runoff and pollution, and construct a rainwater garden using native plants.

Chamberlain Children’s Center $1,000.00
The Cienega 4-H Club will work to create street-side landscaping for the Chamberlain Children’s Center to provide privacy and shade from trees and clean up the county roadside. They will recruit 4-H’ers in the county to join their effort and participate in their work days.

Live Oak Canyon Citizenship and Wildlife Project $1,200.00
East Valley 4-H Club will join forces with the Redlands Conservancy and Redlands Heritage Trails Alliance and the San Bernardino County East Valley 4-H Photography Club to produce a pamphlet that will educate and heighten awareness of the local wildlife area, Live Oak Canyon.

ESL Instruction $2,100.00
The Valley Center 4-H Club provides support services for the English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction at Valley Center Pauma Unified School District. 4-H’ers work with children of the adult students helping to increase their vocabulary and with adult students with the purchase of books.

4-H Million Trees Project $3,500.00
The Belmont 4-H Club is in their second year of a five year project to plant 1,000,000 trees nationwide to combat global warming. Planting started in March of 2008 and so far 4-H groups throughout the U.S. have responded by planting 20,000 trees with another $25,000 planned. The group has collaborated with the Arbor Foundation to affordably supply native trees to groups. The group has a website at: http://www.4hmilliontrees.org/.

Wrapped in Love Blankets $161.00
The Felton 4-H Club will make fleece blankets for children and premature babies who are undergoing treatment for various illnesses at the Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital.

Camp Improvement Project $800.00
The Hi 4-H Club on Siskiyou County will be collaborating with the U.S. Forest Service and Cal Fire to produce an educational program about forest management and fire protection and to clean up the forest service camp in their county.
