2007 Dean Memorial 4-H Legacy Funding Recipients
Yolo County, Putah Creek 4-H Club – “Putah Creek 4-H Club Start-Up Fund” - $2,285.00
The Putah Creek 4-H Club was chartered in summer 2007 as a new club serving children in the Yolo County Housing Authority Winters housing facility. No funds are available for the immediate implementation of four projects that are desired by the community. With 35+ children already enrolled, it is critical that some start-up funds are acquired so these projects can begin. With the collaboration of Collegiate 4-H at UC Davis, UC Davis John Muir Institute for the Environment, Yolo County Housing Authority, and the Yolo County 4-H Office, this club stands to offer 4-H new audiences, cooperative frameworks, and robust evaluation while providing 4-H quality youth development programs.
Santa Barbara County, 4-H Camp Wahoo! – “Family Campership Discounts” - $1,300.00
To provide funding to families who are sending more than one child to 4-H camp. Santa Barbara County 4-H Camp Wahoo! is an annual week long camp, for 4-H members ages 10 to 13 years. The camp is organized and run by 4-H teen leaders under the guidance of adult volunteers.
Lake County – “UCCE 4-H and Master Gardener Collaboration” - $1,225.00
Each year youth enroll in horticulture projects. However, the projects are rarely carried out successfully. 4-H and Master Gardener staff collaborated with 10 master gardeners to design 12 workshops to teach gardening to 4-H volunteers, parents and teen leaders. The collaborative will produce 12 user-friendly kits designed to provide information and the necessary tools to teach a broad scope of gardening information. Once the workshops are complete, the kits will be available for 4-H volunteers and teen leaders to check out and teach gardening to youth.
Santa Cruz County, Corralitos/La Selva Beach 4-H Camp – “Camp Service” - $1,000
The camp service project is a newly formed county-wide project with the goal being to assist in improving and maintaining the grounds of Camp Loma, used annually for Santa Cruz County 4-H summer camp. Our first project is to install a fully automated irrigation system in the field at Camp Loma with a dedicated water supply pump. A member county for the camp service project is in the formation stages, seeing as the project itself is still a fledgling, but we are anticipating a healthy level of participation. Santa Cruz County as a whole emphasizes community service throughout 4-H program activities and the majority of members have a high level of enthusiasm for helping the community.
Monterey County, Buena Vista 4-H Club – “Vegetable Judging” - $750.00
Currently three 4-H clubs are reviving this project so that members can promote 4-H’s original goal of increasing ag knowledge and life skills in the Salinas Valley. The ultimate goal would be for the three Central Coast Counties to have access to materials and share in events such as projects, presentation days, farm days, field days, and local fairs. Vegetable crop judging consists of a team of unlimited members, with the top three scores used for the team score. Up to eighty specimens of vegetables, seeds, weeds, insects, market defects, disease and transplants are identified. Needed are laminated color photos of specimens and individual information packets.
Humboldt County – “4-H Outreach to New Audiences” - $678.39
Humboldt County is the birthplace of 4-H in California. The original clubs that began in 1913 are still active and thriving. The size and scope of 4-H in Humboldt County has varied over the years and today we have 12 traditional clubs and 8 other exciting delivery modes reaching 1471 youth and 261 adults in the 2006-2007 program year. As we approach the 95th and 100th year milestones of 4-H in our county, we are currently involved in an in-depth Strategic Planning process to guide our future growth. One factor that has surfaced is that despite our longevity and multitude of current outreach efforts, some people still miss hearing about how and when to sign up for 4-H. We want to change that! In order to reach new audiences we are proposing using lawn signs in every community in our county from August to October to “increase public awareness of the 4-H Youth Development Program.” We also are purchasing bumper stickers to give to our 4-H families. Our purpose is to “expand the reach of the 4-H Youth Development Program not currently being reached by conventional means.” The new adults and youth that will join 4-H and support the program will make a lasting benefit to all of our local clubs and other delivery methods. This will enable more youth to develop citizenship, leadership and life skills and expand the sope of 4-H offered in Humboldt County as we move into our second century. This proposal is not limited to one specific club but will benefit all of our clubs and units.
Santa Clara County, El Sereno 4-H Club – “4-H Archery – Learn by Doing” - $400.00
Last year we started the year with 1 club participating in archery with 2 members. By the end of the year we were up to 12 kids in the program. This year, we have 50 kids in the project with the demand growing. At the public ranges here in the valley, there are very few beginner level targets. There is room for temporary range targets on the range to allow for more kids to be on the line shooting at once. Additional targets will allow us to give more kids shooting time on the line and participate in our county field day.
Santa Clara County – “Countywide Dog Project” - $400.00
We are requesting money in order to purchase equipment for the Santa Clara County dog projects. As our area becomes increasingly suburban, small animal projects such as the dog project will draw members to the 4-H program. The equipment would be available to all of the dog projects in the county for use during project meetings throughout the year. It would be used at county-wide events such as field days and county fair. It would also be used at various non 4-H events where our members have been invited to represent 4-H by doing dog obedience demonstrations.
Butte County, Oroville 4-H Club – “Veterans Center Project for the Homeless and Troubled Veterans of Butte County” - $201.00
The Oroville 4-H club of Butte County is requesting funding for a 4-H community service project that provides the basic needs for the Northern Valley Veterans Center in Butte County. Our 4-H project is to fill toiletry bags with everyday basic essentials. We would fill each bag with the following items: shampoo, soap, hand sanitizer, razor, toothbrush, toothpaste, socks, hair comb and protein bar. While we are asking local dentists to provide toothbrushes, we still need funds to purchase the other items. We want our local veterans to know someone cares about them. We feel this worthwhile project builds the community of our 4-H youth so that they have a connection to the needs of others right in their own community.
