2005 4-H Golden Clover Awards

Golden Clover Award

The Golden Clover Awards recognize outstanding achievement of 4-H members, volunteers, and groups within the 4-H YDP.


Sixty-two applications were submitted during the first year of the 4-H Golden Clover Awards, including fifteen 4-H volunteers, fourteen groups and thirty-three 4-H members. The Selection Committee was composed of a group across California, including one county-based staff, two volunteers, and three 4-H members. Sixteen Golden Clovers were awarded in 2005!

2005 4-H Member Awards

Innovative Ideas
Brennan Cackett, Orange County
Brennan organized "Insect Fairs" at the local library days where he displayed entomology exhibits to the general public. He highlighted the ways in which insects affect our ecosystem and helped to educate the public about the value of "bugs."


Fundraising
Mark Tobias, San Benito County
Mark donated the proceeds of the auction of his pig at the county fair to help raise money for the Cooperative Extension 4-H Office. Newspaper articles, newsletters, and flyers publicized the "Kiss-a-Pig" contest as well as the auction. The final tally raised was $10,750!


Collaboration
Scott McCalla, Sacramento County
For the last five years, Scott has partnered with numerous organizations (including Fairytale Town, Sacramento County Fair, Rotary, Arden-Dimick Library, and Project Linus) to organize community service activities and other projects. Scott has enormous energy and enthusiasm for helping others by collaborating with other community groups.


Citizenship
Philomena Walsh, Siskiyou County
Philomena has had a long history with citizenship and community service throughout her 4-H experience. This year she coordinated a project to gather, organize and distribute information on communicating with deaf people in emergency situations.


Leadership
Carrie Crane, San Bernardino County
Carrie has taken a leadership role at all levels of the 4-H program: local, county, section, state and national. Most impressive is her coordination of the TIC South Sectional Conference for two years. She has also been a delegate to the National 4-H Conference and currently serves as a 2004-2005 4-H State Ambassador.


Strive for Excellence
Betsy Byrum, Solano County
Involved for eight years in 4-H, Betsy has been active at the club, county and state levels. She has been heavily involved in public speaking projects, and has helped others by coordinating a county-wide public speaking workshop. Betsy holds one of two new youth positions on the California 4-H Foundation Board of Directors.


Extended Service to 4-H
Jennifer Hamm, San Joaquin
Jennifer has been an active member for many years in 4-H. During her tenure in the program, she has worked to orient her county 4-H staff to the program and has been involved in citizenship activities. She currently serves as a 4-H State Ambassador.

Special Events/Activities
Ginny Houtz, Orange County
Ginny formed the Orange County 4-H Camp Committee in 1983 and updated camping policies, programs, and practices. She has directed and helped to establish three 4-H camps in the county, including a summer camp, leadership training camp and ski camp.


Mentor
Wanda Curran, Sacramento County
From the 4-H member nominating her, "Wanda's influence on the youth members in our county really can't be understated. Wanda works well with youth and is always encouraging." While coordinating the county cavy project and the Sacramento County 4-H Computer Corps, Wanda puts her whole heart into the 4-H program and the kids who participate in it.


Keith Barnes Lifetime Achievement sponsored by the California Farm Bureau Federation
Diane Heathman, Orange County
Diane has been involved in 4-H since 1971. Over the past thirty-four years, Diane has led multiple projects and served as a community club leader. She has also been involved with awards, presentation days, Youth Expo, and the fair in Orange County. Diane is an adult volunteer that has truly dedicated her head, heart, hands and health to the 4-H Youth Development Program.


Young Leaders
Kristen Weeks, Imperial County
As an extremely involved past 4-H member at the club, county and sectional level, Kristen has continued her participation in 4-H by becoming a 4-H volunteer in 2001. Soon after that, she became a community club leader and County All Star advisor. She is currently starting a new 4-H club focused on leadership and citizenship development.

Fundraising
Mariposa County 4-H Leadership Project
Elizabeth Asbury, Christy Smith, Candi Smith, Kevin Jackson II, Timmy Andre
The Leadership Project solicited businesses in Mariposa County for coupons which the group compiled into a 4-H coupon book. The group then organized 4-H clubs to sell the coupon books to residents of the county. This second year of the project saw improved distribution, additional financial controls, increased sales incentives, and an overall increase in net profit.

Collaboration
4-H TLDI Compton High School (Los Angeles)
Cindi Aguilar, Susana Flores, Jessica Law, Christina Martinez, Karina Martinez
The "Second Chance" project created by the 4-H Teen Leadership Development Institute aimed to help the homeless in Compton by collecting clothes and grooming products. The group collaborated with teachers, school officials, and the Beacon Light Mission to accomplish their project while also assisting other groups, such as the Diabetes Awareness project team, when the TLDI learned about their needs.


Outreach
Tulare Group: National Make a Difference Day Project
Jordan Dunn, Rylin Lindalh, Josh Polich
The project group planned activities for the Tulare County Blind Baby Foundation during the National Make a Difference Day on October 23. Some of the features of the event included a petting farm, hay ride, pumpkin patch, electronic-beeping egg hunt, and cake decorating.

CAL Conference Leadership Team (North Central Section)
Tom Fraser, Mary Engebreth, Robert Fraser, Zannie Delara, Rebekah Jones, Trudy Jones, Jennifer Coe, Kara Payne, Angelina Miller, Gina Lee, Julainne Freeman, Spencer Hewitt, Kristen Lee, Jeanette Drew, Jacki Degrazia
The team presented the North Central Section "Creating a Leader" conference January 28-30, 2005. The mission of the CAL conference is to inspire young people to discover and develop their personal best, while seeking balance in mental, physical, and social living. The planning group involves a wide spectrum of 4-H members and volunteers from the fifteen counties in the North Central section.


Citizenship
San Joaquin 4-H County Citizenship FOCUS Committee
Tricia Stockar, Sarah McConahey, Jennifer Hamm, Jane Durston, Nick Cleveland, Adrianne Sarale
The committee organized a countywide citizenship focus weekend conference that included speakers, workshops, meetings with government officials, and mock government.
