GPS Rubrics and Thriving
Overview
Richard Lerner and his team at Tufts University are the world's experts in the topic of youth goal management using the GPS model. They have developed GPS Rubrics and training in partnership with the Thrive Foundation for Youth. The scientists have proven that youth who grow and apply these GPS skills to positive youth development are much more likely to have a hopeful future than those who don't. Youth develop these skills when caring adults model the behavior and encourage youth to practice these GPS skills in situations that are meaningful to them. By using the rubrics, you will:
- Improve your observation skills and be able to identify growth opportunities for youth
- Develop a common language with your peers and youth
- Create targeted strategies alongside youth
- Track progress of youth over time
The best way to fully understand the GPS dimensions and to hone observation and coaching skills is to dive into real-life youth stories and tease out the patterns of behavior that reflect language of the rubrics. The objectives of calibration trainings are to:
- Learn about observation tools called rubrics
- Practice observing youth
- Practice scoring and entering rubric data
Rubrics Calibration Training
All Project Leaders who are working in a Leadership Development Project using the iThrive and iChampion educational materials need to complete GPS Rubrics Calibration Training before completing the baseline GPS and Contribution rubrics that are on the 4-H Online Record Book. This training is completed in about 90 minutes.
There are two options for completing training:
